Antonio James discusses theLuxAve

theLuxAve

theLuxAve is an online platform where fashion enthusiasts can search inventory from niche fashion boutiques around the world.  I met Antonio James at the recent Atlanta Startup Awards.  As we chatted about our respective businesses, I knew I needed to have him on to talk about his innovative platform for fans of hard-to-find, boutique-produced clothing.

Think of an aggregator that makes finding a great deal on travel possible by pulling data from a wide range of sites into one interface.  theLuxAve works in a similar fashion, alerting users to availability of styles and sizes from boutiques across the country in a single portal.

Antonio is actively seeking partnership with funding sources that will help him get his platform to the market. Contact: theluxave@gmail.com

Harrison Ray and Aaron Avers

On this episode I featured Pace Academy senior and Integrity for Life Award nominee, Harrison Ray, and Aaron Avers, Executive Chef of The Establishment’s new Midtown location in Colony Square, along with VP Professional Relations, Dr. Gilles LaMarche, of Life University.

Harrison Ray is a graduating senior at Pace Academy. At Pace, he has participated in the theater program, both appearing on stage in fall musicals and backstage as a member of tech crews. He has also played French horn in the concert and pep bands. Harrison earned varsity letters in cross country and swimming and was a member of the AA State Championship swim team in 2016. At Pace, Harrison was a peer leader, the president of the PASS club, a member of the National Honor Society and was a delegate to Georgia Boys State.

Since 2012, Harrison has been actively involved in Teen Corp, a program sponsored by the Emory Medical School’s physician’s assistant program and led by Jodie Guest that provides free health care to migrant workers in south Georgia. For more information on how to participate in the Teen Corp program contact Jodie Guest at jodie.guest@yahoo.com.  In the fall, he will attend Georgia Tech on a four-year Naval ROTC scholarship. Harrison intends to major in nuclear engineering and hopes to be commissioned in the Navy after graduation.

Aaron Avers has been passionate about cooking since before he was 10 years old.  He has spent his professional life since graduating high school to pursue a career in culinary arts.  Aaron worked at a number of well-known establishments over the years before ultimately deciding to formalize his place as a professional chef and attended culinary school to get his degree.

For a number of years, The Establishment was well-known as a great meet-up spot in Buckhead to hang with friends and share high-quality cocktails.  This year, the owner, Brandon Lewis, decided it was time to elevate the business’s focus on its food offering as well.  The restaurant relocated to Colony Square and Aaron was given the opportunity to serve as Executive Chef, crafting and designing the full menu with selections from a variety of global influences.  Aaron also described their premier burger called “The Chub” and showed us some mouth-watering pics of it as well. We can’t wait to try it!

Orange Theory Fitness of Georgia

Stacie Vaillencort and Laura Salatino of Orange Theory Fitness

Orange Theory Fitness of Georgia

I hosted the Area Developers for Orange Theory Fitness of Georgia, Laura Salatino, and Stacie Vaillencort.  These two entrepreneurs brought the fitness concept to the Atlanta area and they’ve grown rapidly in the metro and in Georgia.

Orangetheory Fitness (www.orangetheoryfitness.com) is the energizing group personal training, interval fitness concept that is sweeping the nation. Backed by the science of excess post-‐exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC)
, Orangetheory Fitness is a 60-‐minute workout broken into intervals of cardiovascular and strength training. Participants burn from 500 to 1000 calories per 60-‐minute training session (individual results vary), using a variety of equipment including treadmills, rowing machines, TRX suspension training™ and free weights.  I burned 818 calories in my workout session at OTF.
The physiology behind the Orangetheory Fitness workout involves heart-‐rate -‐monitored training designed to keep heart rates in a target zone that stimulates metabolism and increases energy. The result is the Orange Effect– more energy, visible toning and extra calorie burn for up to 36 hours post-‐workout. Orangetheory Fitness studios are designed to motivate.
Highly qualified personal trainers inspire participants to beat plateaus and stick to their goals. The dynamic created by working out in a group setting has proven benefits– support, energy, endurance and accountability. This is the
psychology behind Orangetheory Fitness. Each modern studio welcomes participants with upbeat music, state
-‐of-‐the -‐art equipment, contemporary lighting and art. Studios are spacious and clean, with separate men’s
and women’s locker rooms and showers.
And, if you are a business owner or executive, OrangeTheory Fitness offers corporate group rates that allow you to simultaneously provide a terrific benefit to your employees while enjoying decreased healthcare benefits costs as your employees become more and more fit!

Emma Foulkes and Bruce Logue of AGLCC

AGLCC

I recently hosted Susanne Baugh, of Q&A Events on Midtown Business Radio.  As we got to talking, she mentioned that I should meet Emma Foulkes, Presidnt of the Atlanta Gay Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.  Because the respective missions of the chambers of commerce and Business Radio X have such overlap in the business environments we serve, I was pleased to reach out to her.

As the AGLCC’s website explains, “The AGLCC exists to promote the economic growth and advancement of our LGBT and allied business members, our non-profit organizational members as well as our corporate partners and their employees, through advocacy, leadership, education and support.”

When not overseeing AGLCC activities, Emma is Managing Partner at Commonwealth Business & Retirement Services.  She’s a Certified Financial Planner, and has been advising entrepreneurs and high income earners in the Atlanta area since 2001.  She provides retirement and business transition planning services in addition to others.

Bruce Logue is Director of Networking for AGLCC, and Managing Partner/Realtor at The Corbel Group at Keller Williams.  The firm is comprised of a team of residential real estate specialists who use a unique combination of technology, creative and effective marketing, and tailored customer service to help their clients buy, sell, and invest in real estate.  The Corbel Group offers a boutique style approach to real estate services while providing world class results.

Jan Stepp has been in the promotional products business for many years, and is the founder of Pizazzz Promotions.  She shared how she takes a consultative approach with her clients to determine who they are trying to reach, the mission of their brand, and makes recommendations for how to best position themselves in front of prospects most effectively.  She is also actively involved in AGLCC, hosting the chamber’s Vinings networking events.

Pizazzz is your one stop source for creative advertising specialty, promotional items and printed materials! The company can provide literally any item you can imagine with a logo on it!  They have the perfect idea for: customer appreciation, trade show giveaways, sales meetings, grand openings, sales incentives, safety programs, open house, mail enclosures, event promotions, political campaign items, fund raising promotions, banners, table covers, labels, forms, stationary, brochures, holiday gifts, food gift items, non-profit donor gifts, embroidered and screen printed items, cards for any occasion, calendars…if it can be logoed, they have it 🙂

Pizazzz Promotions prides themselves on creative ideas, personal service, competitive pricing and on-time delivery! They work within your guidelines and budget to provide the perfect marketing and promotional items to fit your needs.

Alicyn McLeod is a CPA and Tax Partner with FinLogic, a tax and business advisory firm focused on growing service-based enterprises.  She’s an ambassador for the AGLCC as well as a corporate partner.  FinLogic employs a forward-thinking approach and their experts focus not just on where your company has been, but rather where you want your company to go.

The firm assists businesses in becoming more profitable, more streamlined and helps them resolve technical issues associated with financial reporting, taxation, debt acquisition and capital acquisition strategies.  Whether you are in the process of starting your own business, selling your business or are somewhere in between, the professionals at FinLogic have the experience you need to navigate the issues faced in today’s business world.

David Olt is a doctor of chiropractic and the clinical director of Integrated Chiropractic Center, a Buckhead‐Atlanta practice he founded in 2000.  A Georgia‐licensed chiropractor certified by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners, Dr. Olt has been in practice for 21 years. He has provided pain and wellness care to thousands of patients.

He applies an integrated approach to pain care and health care that combines the effectiveness of several disciplines to support “whole person” care including chiropractic care, spinal and postural screening, corrective exercise instruction, nutritional counseling and massage therapy.  His practice offers a one‐to‐one approach to spine and extremity pain relief that is non‐surgical, non‐pharmaceutical and focused on long‐term health and wellness.

Dr. Olt is a frequent speaker at lunch and learns and hosts the AGLCC Buckhead business builder luncheon. He has earned recognition for chiropractic care (Top 10 Chiropractors in Atlanta) and for business and community involvement (Four Avenues of Service, AGLCC Member of the Year 2014). Dr. Olt also serves as an examiner for the Chiropractic National Boards.

Bowlfreak

Bowlfreak

Bowlfreak

This week I had the opportunity to sit down with long-time friend of mine, Michael Powell, founder of Bowlfreak.  Bowlfreak is a web-based app that allows bowlers who participate in USBC-sanctioned leagues simultaneously compete in bracket-style tournaments via the app with opponents they’re matched with based on their sanctioned handicaps.

Most leagues and even professional bowling tournaments will have bracket tournaments going on within the main event.  The Bowlfreak app creates very large bracket tournaments against similarly-skilled players, providing for potentially very large prize awards for winning/placing in competitions.

Michael shared how the idea for the app was born out of a conversation with a local league manager who opined that there ought to be an app for bowlers.  Given Powell’s previous work as a web designer and creator of numerous mobile apps, he and his colleagues readily possessed the know-how.

The Bowlfreak team is preparing to launch the app to the public for use within the next few weeks.  And, it is entirely possible that with the ability to significantly increase the ability to win sizable prize awards, along with a competitively-level playing field, will help increase interest in participating in USBC-sanctioned leagues.

Q & A Events

A few weeks ago I hosted my friend, Liz Covin, founder of Vivid Salon.  As we talked after the show she told me I needed to meet Colleen Wogan and Suzanne Baugh, of Q & A Events.  On this week’s episode I had the chance to sit down with Q & Q Events’ CEO, Suzanne Baugh.

Suzanne shared how at 14 years old, she went to an Amy Grant concert and, looking around the venue at the set, the crowd, and the excitement that erupted with the launch of the show, that she knew event planning was what she wanted to do.  At the age of 17, she decided to throw her own concert so she booked one of Amy Grant’s back-up singers, secured a sponsor, sold tickets, and put on her first event (and even made a profit).

We talked about the fact that the Q & A Events team views itself as a member of their client’s team, seeking to learn as much as possible about what the goal of the event is, the culture of the client, allowing them to more effectively reflect those details in the execution of the event.

In addition to her work with Q & A Events, Suzanne has also served as president of the Atlanta Gay Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (AGLCC).  We talked about how the organization seeks to serve the LGBT community by providing mentoring, educational offerings, a platform through which to network, and an opportunity to be certified as an LGBT-owned business enterprise.  This certification can open doors to serve as a supplier for numerous government and private enterprises.
